Body fat measurement in Sofia shows how much of your weight is fat. This tells you much more than the scales. If you train, your weight can stay the same while fat goes down and muscle goes up. The measurement is a service in its own right and can be combined with a training programme or a nutrition plan.

What to expect

Kaloyan measures the thickness of a skinfold at several places on your body with a special instrument (skinfold callipers): on the abdomen, thigh, chest or arm. He also measures the circumference of your waist, neck and hips and records your weight. The body fat percentage is calculated from these values.

The measurement is quick and doesn’t hurt; the callipers only press the skin lightly. Wear something that leaves your abdomen, thigh and arm easy to reach. You get the result and an explanation of what it means for your goal.

Every method of measuring gives an approximate value. So it’s most useful to be measured regularly, for example once every 4–8 weeks, under the same conditions and by the same person. That way you see the real change.

Who it’s for

  • You are losing weight and want to know whether you are losing fat rather than muscle.
  • You are training for muscle mass and the scales don’t show the change.
  • You are starting a nutrition plan or a training programme and want a starting point.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a body fat measurement?

The result is approximate and can differ by a few percent from laboratory methods. It is most useful when you measure regularly in the same way, because then the change between measurements is accurate.

How do I prepare?

If you can, come in the morning, or at the same time of day each time, with no workout beforehand and without having drunk a lot of water just before. Don’t put cream on your skin.

How often should I be measured?

Once every 4–8 weeks is enough. More frequent measurements show random fluctuations rather than real change.

What body fat percentage is normal?

For most healthy adults, around 10–20% for men and around 18–30% for women. Kaloyan will explain where your result sits for your age and goal.

Does it hurt?

No. The callipers take hold of the skinfold and press it lightly for a second or two.
