Physiotherapy treatments use heat, electrical current or sound waves to reduce pain and prepare the tissues for movement. At Kainezi Therapy, Kaloyan Zarkov gives them as part of treatment, most often in the same session as manual therapy or exercises. The device eases the pain while the exercises work on the cause. On its own, it is rarely the whole treatment.
What each device does
- TECAR therapy warms the tissues from the inside with radiofrequency energy and reaches deep, to the tendons and joints. Kaloyan often chooses it for lower back and neck pain, osteoarthritis and after injuries.
- Ultrasound therapy works on a small area. It suits pain in a spot you can point to with a finger: tennis elbow, heel pain, an inflamed tendon.
- Electrotherapy dulls the pain for a few hours with low-level currents (TENS and interferential). That’s why it’s best to do your exercises straight after it.
- Electrical muscle stimulation makes a weakened muscle contract when it can’t do so on its own, for example the front thigh muscle (quadriceps) after knee surgery.
- Infrared therapy gives dry heat from a lamp. It relaxes tight muscles before a massage or exercises, or at the end of them.
How the sessions go
The treatments don’t hurt. You lie or sit comfortably, and Kaloyan sets the intensity according to what you feel. Tell him if it feels too hot or unpleasant. A course is usually 3–10 sessions, 2–3 a week. If you have a pacemaker or a metal implant, or you’re pregnant, say so when you book.
You don’t have to choose a device yourself. If you’re not sure what you need, book a consultation and Kaloyan will suggest a combination to suit the problem.
